Jerry Garcia (1942-1995) was the lead guitarist and singer/songwriter for the band The Grateful Dead, which operated out of a house in San Rafael from 1970 to 1995 (when they stopped touring).
The band performed many famous gigs in San Rafael, from their last show with Janis Joplin (July 16, 1970, at the Euphoria) to their first Rex Foundation benefit concert at the Marin Center Veterans Auditorium in 1983. Like most of the band members, Garcia also lived in San Rafael at various times, including spending the last decade of his life at his home in Lucas Valley.
“You need music. I don’t know why.”
